Three Engine Options

The entry-level engine is a powerful 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 turbocharged engine. It delivers 300 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft of torque. This is the standard engine for the Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, and Limited trim levels. The available upgrade is the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 turbocharged engine with direct injection, delivering 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft of torque.

The final option is a 3.3-liter V6 hybrid engine that delivers 318 horsepower and 322 lb.-ft of torque. The hybrid engine comes with the Limited Hybrid and Platinum Hybrid trim levels. All of these engine options come with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

Towing Capacity

Depending on the trim level, the engine, and more, the Explorer has a maximum towing capability of 5,600 pounds. To reach maximum towing capacity, you will need to equip your Explorer with the Class IV Trailer Tow Package.

With the Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, and non-hybrid Limited trim levels, your Explorer can tow up to 5,300 pounds. This still requires the Class IV Trailer Tow Package. The Hybrid 3.3-liter engine can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Optimized Performance

There are several features that too often get overlooked that really help the Explorer perform well in all conditions. First, there is the side-wind stabilization, which comes standard for 2023. It is a feature that helps the vehicle stay in place and on its current path. It does this no matter how harsh the winds get.

Then there is the standard Terrain Management System, which allows the driver to select from many different drive modes. These include Normal, Trail, Slippery, Sport, Tow, and Eco Mode. There are also paddle shifters, which allow you to turn your automatic transmission into an on-demand manual.

The Timberline for Off-Roading

If you plan on many off-roading adventures, consider the Timberline trim level. This model comes with 8.66 inches of ground clearance. It also comes with front struts and rear shocks specifically designed for off-roading. There are 18-inch all-terrain tires as the standard on this model.

Seating

You can seat six people when you choose captain chairs for the second-row seating. If you choose the bench seat then there is room for seven passengers.

Cargo Space

If you fold down the second and third rows, you will have 87.8 cubic feet of cargo space. With just the third row folded down, you will have 47.9 cubic feet of space. If you are using all three rows, there is still 18.2 cubic feet of space in the cargo area.
